The volume of the reserves is 22.5 million hectares for 800 marketable species, whereas only a score of species representing more than 90% of shot down volumes is exploited and marketed. The rate of exploitation is low and the domestic market remains marginal. The most prized species include Sapelli, Mahogany, Iroko, Mohabi, Sipo, Movingui. In this sector, the government undertook actions aimed at elaborating the forest code and improving the regulation on the granting of concessions, on installation plans and the transformation of biodiversity, on the protection of the environment.
B – ENERGY SECTOR
Cameroon is privileged in the Central Africa region in hydroelectric resources. Crude oil reserves represent 400 million barrels. Government strategy encourages the development of the hydroelectric potential and the sound management of mining resources. Potential investors will find in Cameroon, a favourable regulatory framework.
C – AGRICULTURAL SECTOR
Agricultural production is varies and diversified. It ranges from food products to export crops. The average annual volume of food production is evaluated at 6.2 million tons including 1.7 million tons of plantain, 2 million tons of cassava, 820,000 tons of cocyams, 385,000 tons of millet/sorghum and 820,000 tons of corn. Cameroon is the 6th world producer of cocoa and the 8th world producer of coffee. Industrial agriculture and exportation thus represents a production volume of 950.000 tons, 150.000 tons of cocoa, 100.000 tons of coffee, 200.000 tons for cotton, 100.000 tons for rubber, 300.000 tons for sugar and 200.000 tons for banana.
D – TOURISM SECTOR
Cameroon has an outstanding blend of relief, climate, landscape and animal and plant species in Africa: 400 species of mammals, 150 species of reptiles, 400 species of birds and 200 species of dolphins. Protected areas cover a surface area of close to five million hectares. Including seven national parks, seven animal reserves, 28 hunting zones, a sanctuary and three gardens, the largest of which covers an area of 11.280km2, with beautiful natural beaches and many picturesuq bays. The hinterland is wrapped in a lush plant cover offering opportunities for excursions, picnics and eco-tourism.
Characterized by a mild climate, the western part of the country is a showcase of folklore and handicraft. The north with its many national parks and enchanting landscape constitutes a windfall for lovers of photographioc safaris.
E – HANDICRAFT SECTOR
Handicraft embodies a wide range of activities: leatherworks in the northern provinces (bags, shoes, sandals and hassocks),woodwork in the north-west and west provinces (masks, statues, panels and carved beds); Bronze work amongst the Bamouns in the west province (masks, and statues); Raffia and natural fibre in the Centre, South, West and North West provinces; Traditional regalia in the greater north and west and north west provinces.
F – MARITIME TRANSPORT
Hinged between the Atlantic Ocean and five (5) other central African Countries (Chad, the Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, Congo), Cameroon offers access to the 120- million Nigerian market. Cameroon’s Atlantic coast enables it to trade with the outside world and to constitute a gateway for landlocked countries like Chad and the CAR.
Cameroon occupies a strategic position by virtue of its being located at the meeting point of western and southern African sea routes. It boasts of four (4) antonomous ports, namely: Douala, Limbe and Kribi in the heart of the gulf of Guinea, and a river port on the Benoue at Garoua.
G – STOCK EXCHANGE
Besides the many investment opportunities in Cameroon, there exist a stock exchange which is an alternative source of financing. It enables the trading of securities and bonds between those offering capital and those seeking it. It is also a first rate lever of monetary policy, a safe investment market and a privileged basis for other assets.
H – CONSTRUCTION SECTOR
The Cameroon housing and construction materials sector offers many investment opportunities, given the acute shortage of lodging evident in the 2002 statistics of the Ministry in charge of housing. In Yaoundé and Douala alone, the shortage is estimated at 600,000 units, with an annual growth rate of 10%.
Moreover, most construction materials in Cameroon come from abroad; meanwhile geological exploration within the national territory reveals that the local materials sector constitutes a real asset for the national economy. For several years, the level of exploitation of these resources has lagged behind. Coupled with various opportunities embodied in this sector, the Prime Minister Head of Government, on 12th March this year signed circular letter No. 002/CAB/PM to institute the use of local materials in the construction of public buildings. Given that lodging is a basic human need, dealing with the shortage is a prerequisite for the proper advancement and dynamism of the population. There is no gainsaying that a person’s living environment has a direct impact on his action in the society.
But then, sector SMEs today evince shortcomings mostly related to inadequacy of production capacity and of financial and human resources.
